Summary

How can we be more gender transformative when engaging men? How do we move from the service delivery model to a more gender transformative model that addresses the norms around masculinity and men’s heteronormative sexuality in the SRHR and GBV work of IPPF?

IPPF, as a leading SRHR service provider has been one of the great advocates for transforming patriarchal, toxic and hegemonic masculinities and engaging men and boys for gender and social justice. Many IPPF MAs have implemented interventions and research with and for men and boys on SRHR (contraception and family planning) as well as understanding the norms and social constructs behind SGBV in a variety of contexts. IPPF services are the main entry point for engaging men for demand generation and behavior change interventions.  From these documented experiences and partnerships with alliances such MenEngage, Promundo and others IPPF MAs have gathered learnings, ways of working with and for men and boys for gender and reproductive justice and discovered limitations in approaches. This roundtable is a space for to take stock of challenges and what has worked to transform patriarchal masculinities and engage men and boys for gender, social and reproductive justice. This roundtable is a critical moment to assess IPPF’s niche area when working on men and boys such as; men as allies to change social norm promoting GBV and harmful practices, engaging men in contraception and reproductive health choices and rights, engaging men in care work and working with boys.

Introduction by

Gurminder Singh, Member of IPPF’s Strategy, Investment and Policy Committee. An MA volunteer, Gurminder Singh holds a Bachelor’s in Science and a Bachelor’s in Education. For the last two and a half years, he has served as a Youth Volunteer and Youth Member of the Family Planning Association of India. He is also a Member of PWG-STEPS (Policy Working Group – Standing Towards Enhancing Policy Structures), a national advocacy group formed by THE Young People Foundation. Amongst the skills required for the PSIC, Gurminder can point to policy and strategy formulation skills; a strong understanding of SRHR and related fields; and experience of developing advocacy positions. He is from South Asia, currently located in India. Gurminder is under 25 years old at this time.

Moderator

Tim Shand is Co-founder and Director of ShandClarke consulting, providing bid writing, technical expertise, and strategic guidance to the gender equality and global health sector. He has over 15 years’ experience implementing SRHR programs, research, policy advocacy and campaigns, through his work at the WHO, IPPF, Sonke Gender Justice in South Africa, and Georgetown University’s Institute of Reproductive Health and Promundo in the US. Tim holds an MPH and recently completed his PhD on masculinities and family planning in Southern Malawi, through the UCL Institute for Global Health. He is on the Expert Advisory Group of Queen’s University Belfast’s male involvement in FP initiative, and the Men’s Health Literacy study at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. He has spoken and published widely on supportive male involvement in SRH.

Roundtable Members

Noval Auliady is a young SRHR activist from Indonesia. He is currently working as a program manager in Jakarta Feminist and co-director in Hollaback Jakarta. He leads and initiates inclusive campaigns, programs and mobilisation strategies for social issues. As a queer person, Noval is motivated to contribute to the community and establish an inclusive and supportive environment for all.

John Salvador D. Demdam is Deputy National Youth Representative of the Family Planning Organization of the Philippines (FPOP). He is a graduate of Bachelor of Arts in English major in Linguistics and Literature from the Mindanao State University – General Santos City where he was given the Best Thesis Award. He got some units of Master of Arts in Literature in the University of Southeastern Philippines – Obrero Campus, Davao City. He worked as a Junior and Senior High School Teacher and a College Instructor for two years in two different private schools, namely Dole Philippines School and Holy Trinity College of General Santos City. He is now sitting as one of the Ex-Officios in the Sangguniang Panlungsod (City Council) representing as the President of the Panlungsod na Pederasyon ng mga Sangguniang Kabataan and leading the 6th Sangguniang Kabataan Council of Barangay Calumpang.

John is a strong advocate for sexual and reproductive health rights for young people. He has inspired members of youth network and young people in communities to gain knowledge and skills on sexuality education and address social and gender norms particularly patriarchal masculinities. John has been partnering and working with other youth organizations to intensify information campaigns about ASRHR on social media platforms through live streaming and publication materials/posters.
